Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
Add chopped onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until onions are translucent.
Add diced pumpkin, vegetable broth, and spices (such as nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper). Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes or until the pumpkin is tender.
Remove from heat and allow the soup to cool slightly. Use an immersion blender or regular blender to puree the soup until smooth.
